Black Urad Dal Kanji with Ginger Pepper Thovaiyal


Hi frnz..So, I m here with yet another breakfast combo recipe..It's BLACK URAD DAL KANJI with GINGER PEPPER THUVAIYAL..Actually I made 4 recipes including 2 Kanji and 2 Thuvaiyal recipes in a single video, but I have posted as 2 posts in the blog for ur easy reference..In this post, I have included the easiest version of Black Urad Dal Porridge with a fingerlicking Ginger Thuvaiyal recipe which is yummy to the core n tastes great with even rice n all tiffins..Now let's see how to make them..
 





RECIPE:

Preparation Time: 5+10 mins
Cooking Time: 10+10 mins
Serves: 3 persons
------------------------------------------
INGREDIENTS: [1 cup=240 ml]
------------------------------------------
KANJI:
Whole black Urad Dal - little more than 1/2 cup
Samba rice - 3/4 cup
Salt - as req.
Water - 5 cups
Coconut - 1/2 (grated)

THOVAIYAL:
Coconut oil - 1 to 2 tbsp
Whole pepper - 2 tsp heaped
Dried red chilli - 2
Curry leaves - 1 big sprig
Ginger - 1/8 cup approx. finely chopped or grated
Garlic - 10 pods (finely chopped)
Shallots - 20 to 30 sliced
Tomato - 1 (chopped)
Roasted gram Dal (Pottukadalai) - 1/8 cup
Salt - as req.
 
WATCH HOW TO MAKE THE RECIPE:


METHOD:

KANJI:

1. In a pressure cooker, add the washed rice and dal, salt, water, and pressure cook for 10 whistles in high or medium flame.

2. After the pressure is released, open the cooker, and transfer to the serving plates.

3. After it has become warm, garnish with required quantity of grated coconut and serve immediately. That's it!!

THOVAIYAL:

1. In a pan, pour the oil, and add the pepper, dried red chilli and curry leaves. Saute for a minute.

2. Add the ginger and saute until the color is changed.

3. Add the garlic and roast for a minute.

4. Now, add the shallots and saute until golden brown.

5. Add the tomato and saute until mushy.

6. Finally, add the roasted gram dal and saute for a minute. Switch off the stove and allow to cool.

7. Add the mixture to a blender with required salt. Grind with no or very less water until a perfect Thovaiyal consistency is reached. That's it!!

Your super healthy n delicious Kanji n Thovaiyal is ready to be served!! Njjoy!!
 




NOTE:
----------
1. Instead of black urad dal, green gram can be used for the Kanji.

2. Tomato can be replaced by tamarind in Thovaiyal. If wished, a little coconut too can be used.

3. Any rice can be used for the Kanji. If so, adjust the water and whistles accordingly.
