Snakegourd Milakoottal(புடலங்காய் மிளகூட்டல்)..A delicious side dish for rice, made with snakegourd, dal, pepper and much more..Milakoottal is something similar to paruppu koottu, but here, as the name says, milagu(மிளகு/pepper) is added which gives a nice flavour and taste to the dish..Try this with some hot rice, and jus pappad and pickle, n u won't need any other side dish..It can be mixed with rice as a semigravy, or else be had as a side dish too, it's ur choice..Well, let's move on to the rcp..
Yellow Pumpkin Dal Kootu(பறங்கிக்காய் பருப்பு கூட்டு)
RECIPE:

Preparation Time: 10 mins
Cooking Time: 25 mins
Serves: 3 persons

INGREDIENTS: [1 cup =240 ml]

Snake gourd - 1 cup(peeled & fine chopped)
Moong Dal - 1/2 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Salt - as req.
Water - as req.
To roast and grind:
Pepper - 12
Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
Dried red chilli - 1
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Oil - little
To temper:
Mustard seeds - 3/4 tsp
Asafoetida - a pinch
Urad Dal - 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Oil - little
METHOD:
---------------
1. Pressure cook the moong dal for 4 whistles and mash well.
2. In a vessel, add the snakegourd, turmeric powder, salt, water, and cook well.
3. To roast and grind: Meanwhile, in a pan, pour oil, add pepper, red chilli, cumin seeds, and roast for a few mins. Finally, add the coconut, stir for a minute, and switch off the stove. Now, grind this to a fine paste with required water in a blender.
4. Now, add the ground paste, salt, and little water to the mashed moongdal, and boil for a few mins. Next, add the cooked snakegourd, mix well and switch off the stove after a couple of minutes.
5. In a pan, temper with the 'to temper' ingredients, and pour it over the snakegourd mixture. Mix well, and serve hot!! That's it!!
